October recap: 6 schemes of the month and what to do about each
The key points from our October posts in one place. Save it so you don't have to look for it.
SCHEMES OF THE MONTH
- Electrum. You bumped the fee on a stuck payment, and the bitcoin went to a scammer. Version 4.8.3 with a fix came out on October 24. Update, and download the app only from the official website.
- An email "from your wallet maker" with your name and shipping address. It's phishing after a leak of Passport wallet buyers' data. Don't enter your seed phrase on any website.
- "Support" messaged you first. It isn't support: a real exchange support team doesn't DM you after you ask a question in a chat.
- "We'll recover your stolen crypto." That's the second theft: they ask for an upfront fee for the "recovery", and it goes to the same scammers.
- Strange tokens in your wallet: "Swap your Voucher" or a "USDT" that isn't real USDT. Don't touch them and don't open websites from the token name.
- Address poisoning. A scammer creates an address that looks like your counterparty's. Before sending, check the whole address, not just the first and last characters.
